When a supplier compliance failure surfaces — an expired certification nobody caught, a sanctions match that slipped through, a tax document that was never re-verified — the instinctive response is usually to write a new policy.

“Just run a reverse auction” has become procurement shorthand for “get a better price,” the same way “just automate it” has become shorthand for almost any process problem. Neither shortcut survives contact with the actual decision a sourcing manager has to make. Reverse auctions and traditional RFQs aren’t a better-versus-worse pair — they’re two different competitive mechanisms, and which one wins depends heavily on what’s actually being sourced.

Ask a CPO at a global enterprise how many ERP systems their company runs, and the honest answer is rarely “one.” A decade of mergers, regional rollouts, and divisional autonomy means most large organizations are running SAP in one business unit, Oracle in another, and a handful of legacy or acquired systems somewhere in between.

Most procurement leaders can quantify negotiated savings with remarkable precision. They can point to sourcing events, supplier rationalisation initiatives, category strategies, and contract negotiations that have generated measurable value. Yet many organisations continue to experience a frustrating reality: despite achieving procurement savings on paper, financial performance does not improve to the same extent.

For decades, finance teams have accepted the financial close as an unavoidable period of organisational stress. Month-end and quarter-end bring familiar challenges: reconciliations, journal entries, data validation, intercompany adjustments, reporting deadlines, and long working hours.

Ask most CFOs about working capital performance and they will point to familiar metrics: Days Payable Outstanding (DPO), Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), inventory turns, and cash conversion cycle. These indicators remain important, but they often conceal a more uncomfortable reality. A substantial portion of working capital inefficiency is not a treasury problem. It is an operational problem.
