Enterprises rarely fail at AI because they lack ambition or investment. They stall because the gap between running a successful pilot and operating AI reliably at enterprise scale is wider than most organizations initially recognize. A model that performs well in a controlled test environment frequently encounters legacy systems, inconsistent data, unclear ownership, and unresolved governance questions the moment it is asked to operate across real business processes.

Regulated enterprises face a governance challenge that generic AI adoption advice rarely addresses: the same AI system can be simultaneously effective, compliant, and dangerous depending on the process it touches, the data it uses, and the oversight structure around it.

Many organizations describe their AI strategy as a technology roadmap: which models to license, which platforms to deploy, which tools to pilot next quarter. This framing consistently underdelivers, because AI initiatives fail less often from technology limitations than from misalignment between business objectives, data readiness, governance, and operating models that were never designed to work together.

Many enterprises approach generative AI use-case discovery backwards: they start with a model or platform capability and search for a problem to attach it to. This produces a long list of technically interesting pilots and very few that survive contact with real budget owners, data constraints, or measurable business outcomes.

Industry forecasts about agentic AI adoption in supply chain have converged on a similar shape: a small fraction of enterprises running agentic capabilities today, a large majority expected to by the end of the decade. The exact numbers vary by source, but the direction is not in dispute.

Somewhere in most large enterprises, there's a contract that matters a great deal and cannot be located quickly. It might be a supplier agreement with a price-lock clause about to expire. It might be a customer contract with an auto-renewal date nobody flagged. Whatever it is, someone eventually needs it urgently, and the process of finding it looks less like a search and more like an investigation.

Archiving has an image problem. Mention it in a transformation conversation and the reaction is usually mild disinterest, the enterprise equivalent of talking about filing cabinets. It doesn't have the urgency of a broken invoice process or the visibility of a customer-facing system.

Ask a procurement leader how long it takes to onboard a new supplier, and you'll usually get an estimate for the paperwork: a form, a tax certificate, a banking detail update. Ask how long it actually takes from first contact to first purchase order, and the answer is often measured in weeks, sometimes months.

Every accounts payable team inherits the same ritual. An invoice arrives. It's compared against a purchase order and a goods receipt. If the three line up, the invoice pays. If they don't, someone has to figure out why.
